Pensacola, FL

After leaving Port Allen, we crossed the Mississippi into Baton Rouge (quick, what's the capital of Louisiana?).  I must say that the Mississippi is a little wider down here than it is up in Itasca.  When we visited there, we were able to step across the Mississippi - wouldn't want to try that at Baton Rouge :-).

Certainly don't have to worry about hills and mountains on this part of the trip.  I think the highest hill on I-10 in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida is a highway interchange and even most of those aren't elevated.  Lots of water and trees, however.  Stretches of I-10 are built on stilts/pilings over the bayous and waterways.  We came the closest to an accident that we ever had on our recent trips when we hit a wet roadway/construction zone.  Traffic was heavy and someone up ahead lost control and started a heavy braking episode with cars sliding across lanes.  Thankfully, Vi did an excellent job of maintaining control and kept her cool.  For an instant, it was scary and got the heart rate accelerated.

We arrived in Pensacola yesterday afternoon to a great welcome from George III and Char - JT was working at the Cypress Links Golf Course. George is still at sea aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, but is expected back next month.  After unpacking and some conversation, I went to pick up JT at the golf course.  He has a fun (albeit hard) job at the golf course - does everything from range ball pick-up to cart control to whatever needs to be done (especially those things that the older guys don't want to do).

Heard from Tom III and Carolyn on their trip south, first from Charlotte, NC (must have thought that's where Char lived) and then from New Orleans where they arrived late in the evening.  T, C and Katie arrived together in NOLA and were awaiting the arrival of Danny from NYC.  They'll spend a couple of days in New Orleans and then come over to Pensacola Tuesday.  We might even save some of those aforementioned cookies for them.

We had fun playing pinochle last night.  Char and the boys don't get much of a chance except when they are either up in Vermont or visiting with us.  It was fun and we had a good time, especially fueled with hot cocoa and some of Vi's chocolate chip cookies.  JT and I played Char and George III while was the kibitzer/advisor/arbiter.
