San Antonio, TX
We thought it only appropriate to be in San Antonio, TX on Tom III's birthday since he was born here some years ago. We looked for the plaque memorializing his birth, but it seems to have gotten lost with all the renovations over the years :-). Brooke Army Medical Center is still here, but it looks a lot different than it did back in those days. At the time I was going through Officer Candidate School and was due to graduate in December. The inscription on my challenge coin reads - Silver Stripes to Gold Bars.
We arrived in mid-afternoon after an early start from Van Horn. Night life in Van Horn wasn't that exciting, so we went to bed early. Woke at the break of dawn and drove east into the sunrise! Not a very challenging drive (especially since Vi does all of the driving), although the country side did change from the desert and chaparral to the hill country around San Antonio. We're staying at the Kelly Inn on the old Kelly AFB. They combined Kelly AFB and Lackland AFB into Joint Base San Antonio. Kelly, which used to be an Air Force Logistics Command base has been converted into mostly civilian companies, but there's still some military left here. It has the airfield while Lackland is the "Gateway to the Air Force" and is the main basic training base for the USAF.
Stopped by the Gateway Golf Course on Lackland because we have a tee time there tomorrow at 11:30. It was locked up tighter than a drum at 4:00 in the afternoon - not much activity. Looks like a nice course - we stopped here two years ago and have been wanting to play it ever since. Course is hilly and doesn't look like we would want to walk it (as if we even thought about it).
After a quiet evening and dinner, we're back in the room watching the CMA show and doing laundry - how's that for an exciting night in San Antonio!
